Viking Knitting

Jan, one of our members, is going to give a workshop on this at the meeting of Designing Women this Saturday. I have been collecting all the necessary bits and pieces - is it possible that I may actually use up a bit of the wire I have accumulated over the years? It's not only books that I feel I have to acquire.

Some of the bits needed are to be found in "the shed" - Kevin has come up trumps with Allen keys. I had to buy a small jewellers' vise though because he only has a major one permanently fixed to the workbench.

I have been surfing and have found some stuff on the net that has whetted my appetite. This is a necklace by an American lady, Jan Raven.

She sells a .pdf tutorial on the process. If I like what I manage in Jan's workshop I may buy it.

Later:I couldn't wait and I have bought it. Now to try out the technique.

Nothing Much - Ordinary Extraordinary

Yesterday afternoon we picked up our friend Graham, who lives in Sydney, at the airport. We checked the plane arrival time (1.56) and arrived at the airport environs just after two to await a mobile call from him that he had collected his bags and was ready to be picked up. We parked in a neighbouring street, next to a stand of these towering eucalypts, and waited and waited and waited. Eventually we collected him at nearly 3pm.

After a short respite at home we went to Cottesloe to see the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. I was not as impressed by the exhibits as I have been in the last two years, but did enjoy our time there. I really liked the Andy Warhol piece and the emus. This one won the Viewer's Award.

I didn't take a photo of Tania Spencer's work unfortunately, but here's a scan from the catalogue. The scan does not show clearly that the piece is made from knitted galvanised wire (almost a textile!) There were several small children crawling in and out and looking like they were having enormous fun doing it.

Today I have been to the eye specialist. Good news. He has given me some steroid eyedrops to clean up the problem with my left eye, and reassured me that the cataracts I am starting to develop are not going to cause a problem for a few years yet. BUT I can't wear my lenses for at least another week, boo-hoo.

Twisted Scarf

I found the pattern for this scarf in the first issue of Thr3fold and started knitting it back in May at the Scquilters Retreat. It is a very simple and intriguing pattern.

I finally finished it a few weeks ago, just before the cold weather finished! The yarn is Noro Silk Garden and my version is knitted on 7mm needles.

It owes its appearance on the blog to Wendy who saw it at the Retreat and enquired about its progress. Thanks, Wendy.

Craft Fair

I had a lovely day today at the Craft Fair. I went with my sister Dorothy and met lots of people I knew. I had a shopping list and got everything I needed, but of course had to buy some things I didn't need - just wanted.

I fell in love with these cable needles. They are turned from dyed, laminated wood. There were also knitting needles of all sizes made the same way, but I resisted them.

Then I bought this yarn - not to knit socks, but to knit a scarf. I just happen to have a pattern for a cabled scarf - the needles will come in handy.

I am going back on Sunday. Designing Women have a display (which I helped set up yesterday) and I am rostered to look after it in the morning. I will wander and take some photos after that. The Art to Wear exhibit is great and so is the display of contemporary quilts by the Canberra group, Tactile.
